When These Mountains Burn by David Joy

When These Mountains Burn by David Joy

Rating: 5 Tommy two ton stars

Summary: Heroin is overrun the North Carolina mountains and hollers. When a father has to take matters into his own hands to settle the death of his son. When the local and federal law enforcement have to find the dealers. When another young man realizes he can’t ever get clean. Lots of storylines make a character rich novel.

Comments: Not many writers these days can capture a mood like Joy does and pen it down. David Joy in his fourth novels has become a gifted must read storyteller. Highly recommend. I’d love to sit in a boat with him a walleye hunt.

The Whites by Richard Price

The Whites by Richard Price

Rating: 3 confused stars

Summary: A New York police detective working graveyard is haunted by his past and an unknown person stalking his family. A character driven novel.

Comments: My first foray into Richard Price. Great writing and character development. Confusingly written as if you are thrown into a already moving story. Never got a feel for who is who and why.
